What Causes Spider Veins?

Researchers have not been able to figure out what exactly what causes Spider Veins. But we do know that they are hereditary, commonly being passed from family member to family member through genes. There is also a greater likelihood for women to get them, with females developing them much more frequently than males. But unfortunately if you are genetically prone to spider veins then you will most-likely develop them over time, no matter how healthy you are.

There are some types of things that can accelerate the quantity and severity of the development of spider veins. Such as prolonged standing without movement; this can accelerate the development of spider veins. Therefore, occupations in which you stand for many hours a day, such as teachers, nurses, cosmetologists, etc, tend to have more severe cases at earlier ages. You are more-likely to get spider veins with age. Veins tend to weaken as you get older, so if you are prone to spider veins then they will get more severe and more extensive as you age. Being overweight or being pregnant also can to accelerate and worsen spider veins because of the increased demand on the veins. Some patients that have spider veins could have an underlying venous (vein) disease that is called venous insufficiency or venous reflux. If there is evidence of this on your exam then you should talk to your healthcare provider right away.

Can You Cure Spider Veins?

No. Since spider veins are mostly due to genetics, they can't be cured. We can treat them with a small injection to make them go away, but they will usually return in a few years (for some patients). Many people get them treated every few years to maintain a youthful and natural appearance.

How Can I Get My Varicose Veins Removed?

There are two ways: laser or sclerotherapy. We prefer not to use laser at BEAUTIFY because most lasers are not specifically made to effectively treat varicose spider veins. There are increased risks of skin discoloration with lasers. Sclerotherapy has been utilized for many decades for the treatment of varicose veins. There are safe and effective medications available that are FDA approved that we use at BEAUTIFY. These medications have a high efficacy rate along with a low side effect profile so we feel they are best for our patients. The treatments is very low in terms of pain and only takes a few minutes from start to finish! We will use very small micro-needles and the medications have a temporary numbing effect as they are injected, making the treatments very tolerable.
